Introduction: A DIY Approach to Mindful Microdosing
Microdosing psychedelic mushrooms has gained popularity in recent years. People use it to boost creativity, improve mood, and sharpen mental focus, all without experiencing a full psychedelic trip. Making your own capsules is a simple way to ensure consistency, safety, and control over your experience.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to prepare mushroom microdosing capsules at home using a formula inspired by Paul Stamets. This combination includes psilocybin, Lion’s Mane mushroom, and niacin. These ingredients may work together to support brain health and regeneration.
Important: Always consult a medical professional before starting any supplement, especially those involving psilocybin.
What Is Microdosing?
Microdosing means taking very small amounts of a psychedelic substance. The goal is to feel subtle benefits like mental clarity or emotional balance without strong perceptual effects.
Paul Stamets, a well-known mycologist, developed a method that blends three ingredients believed to support neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells. According to his patent, these ingredients can work together to repair and support the brain over time.
The three key ingredients in the Stamets Stack are:
Psilocybin or Psilocin: These act as serotonin agonists and may promote new neural connections.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom: Contains erinacines and hericenones, compounds that help stimulate nerve growth.
Niacin (Vitamin B3): Improves blood flow and may help deliver the active compounds more effectively throughout the nervous system.
A Note on Safety and Personalization
Each person’s response to microdosing will be different. Many people start with small doses and track how they feel over time. They avoid combining their capsules with other supplements or medications unless they’ve cleared it with a medical provider.
Batch Recipe: Makes 24 Capsules Based on Capsule Size
Each recipe below creates 24 capsules using a capsule-filling machine. The total weight of ingredients is split evenly across all 24 capsules.
These blends are designed for a common microdosing schedule, such as 1 capsule every third day as outlined in the Stamets protocol.
If you’ve watched the earlier video tutorial, you may notice that the ingredient ranges there are slightly different. The numbers in this blog post reflect updated guidance as of August 2025, based on a closer reading of the original patent and feedback from the community.
Quick Notes:
Each recipe fills 24 capsules using a capsule machine.
All capsule sizes contain 15 mg of niacin per capsule, regardless of size.
The difference lies in the total amount of mushrooms and lion’s mane per capsule.
To stay within the safe microdosing range described in Paul Stamets’ patent, most people begin with Size #1 or #0 capsules.
Per Capsule Approximation
If you’re just getting started, it can be hard to visualize how much you’re actually consuming with each capsule. This table gives you a quick reference for the approximate contents of a single capsule based on its size. Whether you’re microdosing with Size #1 capsules or scaling up to Size #00 or #000, this chart helps you understand the typical amount of each ingredient per capsule.
Use it to guide understand dosage, track schedules, or speak more clearly with a healthcare provider about what you’re thinking about taking.
Scientifically Referenced Ingredient Ranges
The recipes here are based on Paul Stamets’ 2018 patent on neuroregenerative mushroom blends. For people using whole dried mushrooms at home, the most relevant formula is based on mushrooms that contain approximately 1% psilocybin or psilocin.
Ingredient | Daily Range | Notes |
Psilocybin-containing mushrooms | 100 mg to 1,000 mg (0.1 g to 1 g) | Based on an estimated 1% psilocybin or psilocin content in dried mushrooms |
Lion’s Mane mushroom extract | 50 mg to 200 mg | Supports Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) synthesis |
Niacin (Vitamin B3) | 101 mg to 200 mg | Enhances delivery and acts as a deterrent to recreational use |
These ingredients are combined to support neurogenesis, memory, and cognitive function. The ratios in each capsule recipe reflect these ranges, scaled appropriately for batch size and capsule size.
Material and Instructions
For those interested in how microdosing capsules are typically prepared, the overall process is fairly straightforward and often takes around 20 minutes. Most of that time is spent weighing ingredients and filling capsules using a capsule machine. While no prior experience is required to understand the steps, accuracy and care are considered important throughout the process.
Below is a general list of materials that individuals often use when assembling their own capsules for personal education or research purposes. For this example, I'm including dried oyster mushrooms, another medicinal mushroom.
Typical Items Used
Capsule Machine size #1
Empty size #1 capsules (Pullulan, vegetarian or gelatin)
Digital milligram scale (0.01 g precision)
Niacin 100 mg supplement (flush version)
Spoon or mini spatula for mixing
Glass jar with airtight lid (for storing capsules)
Silica gel desiccant packs (food safe)
How People Typically Make Their Capsules
For those exploring the process of capsule-making for educational or research purposes, here’s a general overview of how individuals might prepare a capsule blend using dried mushrooms, Lion’s Mane, and niacin. This is provided purely for informational purposes.
Step 1: Grind the Ingredients
A clean grinder is often used to create a fine powder from dried mushrooms and other ingredients. Some prefer a food mill or spice grinder to ensure a consistent texture.
Step 2: Measure Carefully
Using a digital scale that can measure milligrams, each ingredient is weighed out based on a specific recipe. It’s important that all powders are blended thoroughly for consistency.
Step 3: Load the Capsule Machine
Capsule-filling machines allow people to fill 24 capsules at a time. Powder is spread evenly into the capsule bodies, and the caps are then pressed into place using the machine’s included parts.
Step 4: Store Capsules Safely
Finished capsules are usually stored in a dry, cool, and clearly labeled container. Those who engage in this process typically keep them out of reach of children and pets, and avoid storing them near heat or light.

Video Resource
I’ve made a video that shows you step-by-step! It’s 3 minutes long and will teach you everything that’s taken me years to perfect.
Why are the numbers in this blog different from the video?
The YouTube video shows a version of the formula that was popular at the time it was recorded. Since then, we’ve taken a closer look at Paul Stamets’ patent and community feedback to update the dosage ranges and make the information more accurate and user-friendly.
This blog post includes those August 2025 updates.

Here’s a link to Paul’s patent.
It’s very detailed and has a lot of interesting information about microdosing and background information. I highly recommend checking it out!
What is microdosing, and what are its purported benefits?
Microdosing involves taking very small, sub-perceptual amounts of a psychedelic substance, such as psilocybin-containing mushrooms. The primary goal is to experience subtle benefits without inducing a full psychedelic trip. Enthusiasts report improvements in creativity, mood, mental focus, mental clarity, and emotional balance.
What is the "Stamets Stack," and what are its key ingredients?
The "Stamets Stack" is a specific microdosing formula developed by mycologist Paul Stamets. It combines three key ingredients believed to synergistically support brain health and neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells). These ingredients are:
Psilocybin or Psilocin: These are the primary psychoactive compounds found in certain mushrooms, acting as serotonin agonists and potentially promoting new neural connections.
Lion's Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus): This medicinal mushroom contains compounds called erinacines and hericenones, which are known to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis.
Niacin (Vitamin B3): Niacin is included to improve blood flow, which may help deliver the active compounds more effectively throughout the nervous system. Counter-intuitively, it is also suggested to deter recreational abuse by causing an uncomfortable "flush."
How do the ingredients in the Stamets Stack work together to support neurological health?
The combination of ingredients is designed to promote neurogenesis and improve various aspects of neurological function. Psilocybin/psilocin are believed to encourage new neural connections and are serotonin agonists. Lion's Mane contributes compounds (erinacines and hericenones) that stimulate nerve growth. Niacin acts as a vasodilator, improving blood flow to the brain, and is thought to enhance the delivery and effectiveness of the other compounds by helping them cross the blood-brain barrier and reach nerve endings. This unique synergy aims to repair and support the brain over time, potentially mitigating age-related neurological decline and aiding in recovery from neurotoxin exposure or head trauma.
What are the recommended dosages for the Stamets Stack ingredients, particularly for psilocybin-containing mushrooms?
For homemade capsules based on Paul Stamets' patent, the daily ranges are as follows:
Psilocybin-containing mushrooms: 100 mg to 1,000 mg (0.1 g to 1 g), based on an estimated 1% psilocybin or psilocin content.
Lion's Mane mushroom extract: 50 mg to 200 mg.
Niacin (Vitamin B3): 101 mg to 200 mg.
Capsule sizes are designed to fit these ranges, with Size #1 capsules containing approximately 150 mg of dried mushrooms and Lion's Mane extract, and 15 mg of niacin.
What are the general steps for making microdosing capsules at home?
The process for making microdosing capsules at home typically involves:
Grinding Ingredients: Dried mushrooms and other ingredients are ground into a fine, consistent powder using a clean grinder.
Measuring Carefully: Each ingredient is weighed precisely using a digital milligram scale to ensure accurate dosing according to the recipe. All powders are then thoroughly blended.
Loading the Capsule Machine: A capsule-filling machine is used to fill multiple empty capsules (e.g., 24 at a time) with the mixed powder.
Storing Safely: The finished capsules are stored in a dry, cool, and clearly labeled airtight container, often with desiccant packs, and kept out of reach of children and pets.
What potential benefits for neurological health are claimed by the patent for this combination?
The patent claims that this combination of ingredients can enhance neurogenesis, resolve neuropathy, and improve overall neurological health and functioning. Specific benefits mentioned include improved memory, cognition, motor skills, coordination, hearing, vision, sensory function, and learning. It is also suggested to help mitigate and/or reverse ocular and cochlear nerve degeneration, and potentially protect against and heal from exposure to neurotoxins like sarin. The invention aims to prevent the loss of accumulated knowledge due to neurological disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's.
Are there any safety precautions or important considerations when microdosing or preparing these capsules?
Yes, several important safety precautions are highlighted:
Medical Consultation: Always consult a medical professional before starting any supplement, especially those involving psilocybin or other active compounds.
Personalization: Individual responses to microdosing vary, so it's recommended to start with small doses and track personal effects.
Avoid Combinations: Do not combine capsules with other supplements or medications unless cleared by a medical provider.
Niacin Dosage: While niacin offers benefits, higher doses (e.g., 500 mg/day without medical supervision) can lead to adverse effects like liver damage. The inclusion of niacin at certain levels may also deter recreational abuse due to its uncomfortable flushing effect.
Storage: Store finished capsules safely in a dry, cool, labeled container, out of reach of children and pets, and away from heat or light.
Legality: The sources provide information for educational purposes only and do not encourage or condone the use of any substance in violation of applicable laws.
How does the patent propose to address the potential for abuse of psilocybin in these formulations?
The patent suggests that adding niacin in sufficient quantities (e.g., 101 mg to 200 mg per dose) can cause extreme discomfort, such as flushing, redness, itchiness, burning, and tingling, for individuals who might try to abuse the therapeutic combination to get "high." This mechanism is compared to Antabuse, which induces an unpleasant experience for those abusing alcohol, thereby deterring recreational use and promoting responsible, therapeutic microdosing.

Why is the video recipe different than the online recipe
I want to make my own capsules, I am a beginner, this will be my second time at making my own capsules. I have all the "ingredients", I am confused as to how to measure the niacin .360 grams. The last time I made them it was 2.5 grams dried shrooms, 2.5 grams of lion's mane and 2.5 grams of niacin. If I follow the above Beginner Microdosing Recipes Based on Capsule Size Capsule Size #1 Recipe:
- 3.6 grams dried, ground mushrooms
- 3.6 grams lion's mane mushroom extract
- .360 grams niacin
how do I measure .360 grams of niacin.....is it the same as 3.6 grams of niacin...please help as I want to make them today...thanks! :)
I'm unsure where I went wrong, but my machine holds 100 capsules. I quadrupled the recipe, and there was not enough to go around. Any thoughts on where I veered off course?
thanks so much for all of this! how many capsules does each recipe make?
